Mardi Gras or Carnival is the start of one big party in the city of New Orleans. It ends on Fat Tuesday which is the day before the Lenten season observed by most Christians. The King Cake is a Mardi Gras tradition that is a round or oval filled pastry, with a "baby" hidden inside. It signifies the baby Jesus and the journey of the 3 kings to honor Him. The cake is decorated with 3 colors:
Purple for "Justice", Green for "Faith" and Gold for "Power". Finding the slice with the baby brings good luck and the promise of bringing the next cake.
Today, King Cakes have become so popular that they are now being requested for other occasions as well. ENJOY!
